joined the gym

Yesterday, on the morning of our TEN YEAR wedding anniversary, my husband and I started off our day by heading over to Urban Active to take a tour and check into getting a membership.

We were members of 24 Hour Fitness a few years ago when we lived in Colorado.  The equipment is a lot nicer now (at least compared to the "Express" version that I went to 4 years ago).  Each Precor machine has it's very own television.  Wow!  With cable.  Honestly I've always preferred music but if I want to watch something, I can.  Pretty cool.  I had no idea!

They have a pool and some of the group fitness classes are in the pool.  You won't catch me in a bathing suit for awhile, but hey!  It's there.  I'm just reporting.  The spinning classes have 35 bikes.  They even have a movie room and keep it pretty dark.  You can go in there an watch a movie while you workout on the treadmills or ellipticals.  The idea of the movie doesn't impress me as much as the idea of Darkness.

You can workout in The Dark without worrying about how much sweat is beading up & down your back and dripping all over your shirt and under your arms.  And who cares what you're wearing or how red our face is getting?!

The only complaint I have so far is one little child care rule.  They make it clear they do not change baby diapers and will call me away from my workout to come do it myself.  Ugh!  I have no problem with diapers---I'm a mom.  It's just the interruption that's annoying.  Especially if I have to hop off a bike in the middle of a spinning class.  And my little Rex is super gassy and stinky.  Even I think he's pooped a half dozen times a day until I open it up and see that diaper is, in fact, empty.  Hopefully they will check.  With their eyes and not their nose.

But I'm super excited!  I went this morning.  All by myself, so I haven't taken my little boys with me yet. My DH stayed home with them because they have runny little noses and coughs.  I spent an hour on the elliptical and listened to some music.  Loved every second of it!  Yes really!

Can I just say it was heaven to go an entire hour without hearing any 2 year olds whine, "Mommy, I want chocolate miiiiiilk!"

For ONE WHOLE HOUR, I did not hear any crying, screaming, or fussing.  I did not hear myself warn, "Santa is watching you!"  I did not hear anyone beg me for chocolate milk.  Or fruit snacks.  I did not put anyone in timeout.  I did not recite The Serenity Prayer in my head.  Not even once.

You might think,  "She's just desperate for some time to herself."

Or, "She just needs a break from her little ones!"

Or, "She's not there to work out--she's just there to escape."

Hey, I'm not arguing.  My escape burned 500 calories.  I'm skeptical, but whatever.  :)

  1. Hey! I'm a new follower, and I will say that escaping to burn 500 calories is WAY WAY better than escaping to EAT 500 extra calories. I'm not a mom, but there have been plenty of times when I have left work in the middle of the afternoon to down a huge sundae to escape from the stress. (Not since I got my lovely lapband, but still.) So...good for you!

  2. I'm a new follower too. This is a great post. You write really well and have a very funny, natural style. I especially like the description of stinky little Rex. I remember those days!

I also remember "escaping" the house and feeling so FREE! I'd always say something like, "Let's get margarittas!" because it was such a great feeling to get a bit of time for myself.

I'm glad you enjoyed the gym! It sounds very nice.

I was banded last February and have lost 100+ lbs. since. I'm now a "normal" size and I'm SO GLAD I did it! The BEST thing I've ever done for myself!

  4. Great job hitting the gym! I need to heal a little and then I will be getting a membership as well. Good thing my sister and brother in law go to a local gym and he used to be a personal trainer! Hopefully I learn something and get this weight loss underway! I am so excited about your upcoming approval and surgery! If I can answer any questions just let me know! Glad you found my blog! :-)

  5. I'm a new follower, too! Just read all of your blogs from the beginning, loving reading about your journey so far. :) You're doing very well by yourself, but I don't blame you for still wanting the lapband, because I know lots of people who've been on a diet and actually lost all the weight they wanted to and been able to keep it off longer than a few months. :( So far I haven't had much of an appetite (then again I've only been banded since Monday!), so I hope that's comforting! :)

And I don't blame you for wanting to get out - I'm the same way. I loved all my pre-op appointments because I had plenty of time to myself! (...didn't love the babysitter bill, but still!)

  6. I am also a new follower and looking forward to following your journey with you. I was banded in March of 2008 and had a few complications so I am still about 20 pounds from my goal. Have a Merry Christmas.

  11. I actually started my blog before I started the LB process, but I delete every month because I am searching for a new job, and want to remain anonymous. So anyway, this may be a little long! I lost a lot of weight on my own (46 pounds) between Oct. 2009 and May 2010, just to gain it ALL back by July 2010!!! I didn't actually start seriously considering WLS until Sept. 2010 and it moved pretty quickly from that point on. I actually had to gain five pounds to qualify, being that I do not have any co-morbities (other than heart burn). Being the overachiever that I am I gained 10. That put me at 256 and a BMI of 41.3 (I'm 5'7", but talked the doc into using 5'6"....shhhh). On the day of surgery I was down about 10 pounds 39.7 BMI. I know this isn't much, and nothing compared to what you have lot, but I had surgery on Oct.26, less than a month from really starting the process. And I know that isn't a lot for the insurance to complain about, but the doc did say that they would use my initial weight, I thought I was going to have to do the six months like you, and was worried about losing weight in that six months, and he said it wasn't a worry. They WOULD use my starting weight. I am now at 229 and a BMI of 37.0 if you use 5'6". I really wouldn't stress yourself out about it. I would do the water and salt thing, but other than that, don't stress. I went into it with the thought that if it was meant to be it would be. And for me, it was. I hope for you it will be as well. I wish you the best of luck.

  12. Hi
I just read your entire blog and got caught up on your story...you're hilarious!!! Congrats on doing so well on your own! I hope you qualify for surgery though. The insurance part is very frustrating. Keep up the good work and can't wait to follow you along your journey! PS...your boys are adorable!

  14. In regards to "What a Loser's" comment (you left on her blog) my port is on my left side. I don't know if it varies depending on person, or surgeon. Also, I can feel my port, but not very easily. The more you lose the better you can feel it, from my understanding. Hope this answers some questions for ya!
